Photograph of damage from the Beecher Tornado on June 8, 1953 at 8:30 p.m. by Dow Corning photographer Jim Dion. Photograph depicts a mangled car in front of the damaged high school. Information from the Flint Public Library: The tornado touched down at the intersection of W. Coldwater and N. Linden roads, just north of Flint, Michigan. It was a half mile wide and moved slowly, destroying 340 houses and severly damaging many others. It is ranked as the 10th deadliest tornado in U.S. history and it was the last single tornado to cause over 100 deaths, with a death toll of 116 people. |
