Dr. E.O. Barstow was born in Rockport (Cleveland), Ohio to his father, Edwin O. Barstow, and mother, Emma Blodgett on November 13,1879, and passed away at 87 on April 21, 1967 in Midland, Michigan. He attended Case School of Applied Science (Case Institute of Technology) in Cleveland, graduating in 1900. E.O. was the first Chemist hired by Herbert H. Dow following his Case School graduation. He was later reffered to as the "Father of Magnesium" for his work in spearheading Magnesium Production and other related projects. E.O. held around 60 patents related to chemical science, most used at the Dow Chemical Company in the processes there. His Posistions at Dow were as followes; Production Manager of Inorganic Chemicals Division 1914, Director of Dow Chemical Company 1931, and Vice President of the Dow Chemical Company in 1941. He retired from Dow in 1958 after 58 years of working there, and continued to participate as an honorary board member up until his death. E.O. married Florence Katherine Schade of Wisconsin on July 21, 1903. Florence Graduated from Cleveland Public High School and Normal School with a teaching degree. Together they had 4 sons; Dr. Ormond Barstow, Jack Bastow, Dr. Robert Barstow, Frederick Barstow, Dr. Richard Barstow, and one daughter; Mrs. Ruth Dixon (Husband, William). |
